London to Barcelona Charity Bike Ride

My story

In the past couple of years, I have lost my two closest and dearest friends, Laurence Beresford and Lawrence Matz. Both of them supported charities related to their illness so that in future others may have a better outcome than they did. I want to continue that support in their memory, and raise as much money as I can for these charities in a fitting tribute to these special men. Both of them went that extra mile in life and in recognition of that I am planning to undertake a mammoth 1000 mile bike ride from London to Barcelona in September 2012. This will be an epic journey which I hope will inspire donations in line with the amount of effort and training required to accomplish it.

I am totally committed to achieving this goal. It means piling on the miles in training and by the summer I will be training 200 miles per week to give myself a sporting chance of completing the ride in one piece. My previous longest ride was London to Paris, a 3 day event covering 270 miles. That I found hard enough and it was 20 odd years ago, so heaven knows what I am letting myself in for now. If I am fortunate enough to complete this ride, it will not be so much my stamina that gets me through, but more my dogged determination combined with the fact, that as painful as this ride maybe to my 63 year old muscles and bones, it cannot remotely compare with the pain and suffering that my two dear departed friends had to endure.

This site has been set up to log not only the progress of the ride, but to also bring awareness of the two fantastic charities I am riding for. Please do something amazing and support my efforts with a donation to one or both of these great causes, no matter how small. It would be so greatly appreciated. Details of the two charities I am riding for are listed below:-

Laurence Beresford was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in 2006. Despite the best efforts of his doctors he passed away in October 2010 at just 59  His chosen charity was UCL for brain tumour research where funding is desperately needed to find drugs to help combat this horrific cruel disease..
